Changes

I sort of fell off the face of the blog almost a year ago. NRAAM got interrupted by…life, of all things (not mine, but the bf’s), which caused us to cut the weekend short and return home for a family emergency. I was busy helping him try to deal with things until I went out to Washington to see my brother and his family (so much fun!!!), but at the airport on the way back, my dad fell and hurt himself pretty bad. He even ended up having surgery on his “fake knee” (as my nephew calls it) to drain the hematoma from the fall, and I’m still not sure that he doesn’t have some residual pain from the broken sternum when he sneezes too hard. My mom started to get sick shortly thereafter, and we’ve spent months trying to track down exactly what was going on with her, because rheumatology nonsense never gives up the answer easily, but at one point, she could barely even walk for a couple of weeks.

In the midst of all of this, what was supposed to be a fun-filled last summer up north with the bf and my other friends turned into an “all hands on deck” 6 months of putting out fires everywhere I could, never having enough time in any one place to get much accomplished.

Oh, and I was building my new house at the same time.

So I’m finally in my new house (only a few weeks late). LOVE IT. Mom and Dad are slowly doing better. Nephew is absolutely over the moon that I’ve moved to town, because I know how to play Pokemon, and because I have a spare bedroom for him to come have “sleepovers at auntie’s”. Still surrounded by boxes, but the kitchen and dining rooms are all unpacked. Get my new closets put in tomorrow, so I can start hanging clothes (and quit wearing the same clothes I’ve had on for two months…thank you, baby brother, for noticing THAT fact). And I can start dragging all of the firearms and ammo out of all the nooks and crannies that they’ve been stored in and go shooting.

There are some nice ranges down here that I’m looking forward to trying out, to see which one seems the best fit for me. My brother and nephew go to one that’s a little further away for me, but on paper, it seems to be the nicest one around. Oh, and the least expensive as far as a membership goes. I have high hopes for that.

The other neat thing about where my house is is that it’s really right in the middle of everything, yet it’s not on a busy street. The big road right behind my house runs parallel to the main drag where all the shopping is located, and there are supposedly 50 restaurants within 2 miles of my house. I think I’m going to start going to one new one a week and putting up some pics and reviews here. (Of course, that 50 includes places like McD’s and such, but hey…one a week for a year.)

Happy Christmas to All!

Matthew 1: 18-25

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means “God is with us.”
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.
He had no relations with her until she bore a son,
and he named him Jesus.

May you all have a happy and blessed Christmas and a joyous and rewarding new year!

PSA: USAA Phishing

Just a warning to my friends out there who have USAA…

I woke up to a very good phishing email this morning. If I’d been just slightly less (or more?) caffeinated when I read it, I might’ve done something stupid.

It read something about needing to update my profile, so please click on the link.

I’ve gotten those from USAA before.

It had the Security Zone, but it didn’t look quite right. And the graphics were just a wee bit (and I do mean wee bit) fuzzy. The address at the bottom of the email also wasn’t the traditional San Antonio, TX address.

That’s it. Those are the only things that clued me in that it wasn’t right and proper.

I’ve sent it along to USAA. I trust that they’ll get it shut down. But in the meantime, do be careful, and spread the word.

Tunnel Vision

Is it spring yet? No? Are you sure? *sighs* Oh, alright…

It better get here soon, though, or I may just lose my driveway completely! I know things aren’t nearly as bad here as they are further north and east, but my driveway is about 4 feet narrower now than it should be, because I just can’t get the snow shoved any further out anymore. Too much ice underneath… Too much snow built up behind the snow berms… No melting going on…

I may even have to get out there with a spade and a shovel to loosen up some of the ice dam that has been built up by the street plows, because my Polaris and plow just can’t get through what they keep throwing up at the end of the driveway.

You’re really sure it’s not spring?

Never Forget

Today is a day that makes me both sad and angry… Sad for the loss of life and the loss of innocence on that day, 13 years ago. I’ll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news and saw the images of what had happened. Angry to think that there are those out there who did then and are still seeking to harm what I hold dear.

But I refuse to live in fear, and I refuse to stop living, even on this day. So I sit here in my house (which I could not own as a single female, in their world), paid for by the money I earn at my job (which I could not do as a female, in their world), wearing clothes of my choosing (which I could not own nor wear as a female, in their world), and eat BACON (which does not exist in their world) while I study for my board exam.

So Apparently I Moved to Australia

Over the past year, I’ve gotten emails at my main email address (the one with my slightly peculiarly spelled name as the root of it) from various businesses in Australia. Each time, I reply, telling them that I’m not the person that they think I am. Each time, I’ve gotten an apologetic email back, saying how sorry they are for taking up my time and stating that they’ll delete my email from their system. I’ve often been sorry that I wasn’t who they thought I was, because they’ve all been so very nice about it.

But let me list what I’ve apparently missed out on by not being the me Down Under…

1) I didn’t buy a Range Rover.

2) I didn’t go on a luxury vacation to what looked like a fantastic resort in New Zealand (I’m still longing over this one!).

3) I didn’t buy a Jaguar.

and 4) I didn’t have plumbing work done on my house (the latest email).

When the plumber wrote back, she was not only nice about it, she had me laughing. I’d explained a bit about how often I get these emails, you see, and what I’ve been missing out on, so she replied, “Have a great time in your new cars and also on your fantastic trip away! lol”.

It makes me wish I did live there, just so I could call that plumber and give them some business!

Not in Kansas

I live in the upper midwest. Living here means cold, hard winters (but not nearly as bad as some places get). It means warm, humid summers (but again, not nearly as bad as a lot of places get). Summers also mean big thunder boomer storms rolling though (which I love).

But until this year, it hasn’t meant tornados. I’m not in what is traditionally thought of as “tornado alley”, though basements are traditional equipment on houses around here.

This year, however… This year…

From 1950 to 2013, my county has had 22 tornados. Already this year? 4. FOUR! And two of them have been within just a couple of miles of my house, in a county that is well over 400 sq. mi. That’s cutting things a little close.

I do believe I’ve said before that I’d like a refund on this year, please, because it’s been so broken. If I get hit by a tornado, I’m gonna get louder about demanding that refund.

Out in the Wild

Spring is definitely here, and it has brought all of the animals out of hiding in my backyard again. The turkeys are serenading me under my bedroom window, as they do every spring. Deer are jumping out from behind every tree to try to hit my truck, and little 4-footed critters are everywhere!

I saw something odd today when I was sitting out on the back deck for a few minutes. I was sitting fairly still; the squirrel must not have noticed me. He ran up the stair railing, all around the deck on the deck railing, jumped down and ran across the back of the deck, climbed back up a post on the other side and then back down the stair railing on the other side. But he stopped every few feet and rubbed his cheeks along the wood. It didn’t look like he was scratching himself, and in fact, he stopped at one point and gave his neck a good scruffing with a hind paw.

It made me wonder… Do squirrels mark their territory?

Spring is…Close

The first signs of spring are starting to appear around here…

My zippy little red car made its first appearance out of the garage since November? December? Something like that. And even better, the battery was still live and rarin’ to go! I didn’t have to jump it or hook it up to the trickle charger. Got lucky this year (because I forgot to hook it up when I parked it when the snow started flying).

I’ve also got a new backyard grill on order that will be delivered on Saturday. The old one decided to give up and die over the winter, and after 7 years, it’s time to just let it go and get a new one. I’m really looking forward to the first few steaks on the new one. I’m hoping the weekend cooperates just enough to let us out there to fire it up!

Achievement: Mount Upgrade!

My truck spent some time in the shop yesterday. Nothing was wrong with it, but I needed to get the tow hitch mounted.

DSC_0051

That’s so I can tote and haul the new toy around!

DSC_0053

(And yes, I just had to pose it in front of some of the snow I’ve been pushing with it all winter long. But the latest batch of snow sure didn’t last long. It got into the upper-50s today. Spring is on the way!)
